Introduction to Zakir Husain Delhi College

Zakir Husain Delhi College is the oldest existing educational institution of Delhi. Zakir Husain Delhi College is the only constituent college of the University of Delhi which was came in existence well before the establishment of Delhi University itself.

The Zakir Husain Delhi College was founded in the year 1692 by Ghaziuddin Khan and it was known as Madrasa Ghaziuddin Khan during that period.

In the year 1984, the British East India Company, declared it a center for higher education in the country. During that time the medium of instructions were Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit only. They have also changed its name to The Delhi College.

In the year 1975, Indira Gandhi government renamed it to Zakir Husain College after Dr. Zakir Husain, the former President of India. Since 1975, the college is run by Zakir Husain memorial trust.

The Zakir Husain Delhi College offers both the undergraduate the post graduate courses in art, science, and commerce streams. It is the only college affiliate to Delhi University that offers BA (Hons) courses in Arabic and Persian.

Admission and Cut-off

The admission in various courses offered by the Zakir Husain Delhi college are conducted along with the Delhi University admission cycle. Eligible students can apply for admission in the college. The admissions are conducted based on the merit list. The college publish 4-5 cut-off lists every year.

There are total 1150 seats in the undergraduate courses. Out of 1150 seats, 580 seats are unreserved, 175 seats are reserved for SC, 85 seats are reserved for ST, 310 seats are reserved for OBC, and 38 seats are reserved for PwD students.

Scholarships and Awards

Mirza Mahmood Begg Memorial Scholarship

Rs. 1400 is awarded to three undergraduate students who have scored the highest marks in the final year of university examination.

Sri Narain Nigam Memorial Scholarship

Three scholarships are given to the students who have scored the highest percentage of marks in the second year of university examination

  • 700 for a visually handicapped student
  • 1100 for Humanities and Social
  • 1100 for Science stream

Ved Kumar Gupta Memorial Scholarship

One scholarship of Rs. 1100 is given to a student of second year B.A. (Hons.) who have secured the highest percentage of marks in college.

Kumar Shubham Memorial Scholarship

There are 4 scholarships given to 2nd year students who score the highest percentage marks in the following courses

  • 700 scholarship for a student in B.A. (Hons.) Psychology
  • 350 for a student in Humanities & Social Sciences
  • 350 for a student in Science stream
  • 350 for a Commerce Student.

All India Entrance Scholarships

This scholarship is offered  by the university of Delhi. Students who clear the entrance test get a scholarship of Rs. 250 per month for three years.  

Mrs. Harjinder Grover Memorial Award

This scholarship is given by Botany department. Students who secure the highest marks in B.Sc. (Honours) in Botany Semester IV and B.Sc. Life Sciences Semester IV gets cash prize of Rs. 500.

S.P. Suri Memorial Award

Students securing first position in B.Sc. Chemistry I, II & III year get a medal, books and certificate every year from the Chemistry Department.

M.K. Gupta Proficiency Award

Students who secure 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position in B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry I, II , & III year gets this proficiency award from the Chemistry department.

Gopa Dey Memorial Award

Gopa Dey Memorial Award is given by the Bengali department. 2nd and 3rd year students of B.A. (Hons.), who secure first, second & third position gets Rs. 1500/, Rs. 1000/- and Rs. 500/- prize money.

Vidya Devi Education Fund

This is a special fund created by Mr. Ashok Sharma, Department of Commerce in the name of his mother, for the benefit of students of the College belonging to economically weaker sections of the society.

Fee Concession

The college also provides fee concession to the needy people.
